The conventional approach to biological wastewater treatment rarely considers the volume of excess sludge as one in which substantial improvements
are attainable, and therefore must be persistently persecuted. This is difficult to accept when considering the decreasing availability of land where excess sludge can be deposited safely, the importance of quality and volume of excess sludge deposited to the condition of our environment
and, last but not least, the excessive cost of sludge management, whose taxation is ultimately borne by end users.

Due to the modification of the activated sludge, the microbiological diversity of the ecosystem of the wastewater treatment plant increases
